tldr: If you want my advice about mental health or, I dunno, whatever really, send your question, as anonymously as you wish, via my contact form. I am not a doctor and this is not medical advice. Also not a suicide hotline please use crisistextline.org for that purpose.
So, I’m just trying this out, but I always kinda wanted to be an advice columnist and unlike standup comedy, which I was just getting into before the pandemic, I can easily be an advice columnist from home. I mean, except for all the labor entailed in attempting to give good advice.
So here’s the deal:
- I’m just trying this out, y’all. No promises. I mean, who believes they know what the future holds anymore right now anyway. {pretend this is a meaningful Pema Chodron quote about uncertainty right here, maybe I’ll actually substitute that in someday, but probably not, because I don’t have a lot of spare time to make stuff perfect}.
- Write me a letter asking my advice. I expect most people want to ask me about mental health, but feel free to ask me about whatever, if I think I can help, I will.
- Advice provided as-is, without warranty. I am neither a doctor nor a therapist. I am just a crazy person who has been crazy since the age of 9. I think I can reasonably claim to be an expert in living with my own particular mental illness (bipolar disorder) and, I dunno, probably in a few other things too, but I know I definitely like giving advice (ONLY WHEN ASKED THOUGH! No one wants advice they didn’t ask for!!! and most of the time people will do whatever they damn well please or can’t stop themselves from doing even if they DID ask for your advice, and if they didn’t, well, why would they accept something they didn’t want in the first place?
- If you want my advice, fill out my contact form. You can add your email address or not, as you want. Obviously if you don’t I can’t get back to you for clarification, and I’m not even sure this will go that well like this (amount of research I have done on best way to set up advice column is none!) but let’s try this for now. Do put in a name, obviously it doesn’t have to be yours. If you know me you can also get in touch with me through the regular ways you already know how to get in touch with me.
- I’ll try to be helpful, but I’m not a doctor or a therapist, I can’t dispense medical advice, and I’m not a suicide or crisis hotline. Please use crisistextline.org or similar if this is very urgent, and if it’s a life-threatening emergency, your local psychiatric emergency services team, or your local emergency services number such as 911.
- If you have the financial resources to do so, and you submit a question, and I answer it (or even if I don’t get to yours but some other content I post turns out to be helpful, please consider donating to an organization providing services for mental health/supporting those with mental illness. An example would be https://www.thementalhealthfund.org/, my local community mental health center’s COVID-19 fund or your own local community mental health center.
- Future readers a year down the line from this post: are you wondering where the advice column is? Yeah, I start stuff all the time that doesn’t pan out. Sorry about that. Go ask Captain Awkward instead.
